Derwood, MD 20855
Come to the Agricultural History Farm Park in Derwood to learn about the county’s first food waste composting demonstration site!
See how the University of Maryland Extension (UME) Master Gardeners compost food waste in a solar-powered, three-bin system to produce a high-quality soil amendment for their demonstration garden. The Composting Education Hub was designed to teach farmers and home gardeners about food waste composting with the goal of reducing the county’s solid waste production, recycling valuable plant nutrients, and increasing soil health. It was established in 2024 as the result of collaboration between the Montgomery County Office of Agriculture, Institute for Local Self-Reliance, UME Master Gardeners, and Manna Food Center.
